Megaton Mix & Mashup Week 3: Sky Sentinel

Hello again, everyone! Today brings yet another Megaton Mix & Mashup scenario. You can find special scenarios for Incinerus and Gorghadra in my previous Insiders. This week is all about death from above.

Sky Sentinel tends to be a pretty weak Villain in Megaton Mashup, as a lot of his strength relies on his unit support. So, this week will be all about bringing a new type of model to Megaton Mashup: Minions. Minions are units that support Villains, though the Villain doesn’t really care that much about the little people—they are Villains, after all.

The following rules apply to all Minions in any Megaton Mashup scenarios that uses them:

Minions

  • Minions are units spawned throughout the game by a Villain’s special rules.

Minions and Players

  • Players may not place Minions on hazards or impassable terrain unless that Minion could end an advance in that space without being destroyed.
  • Minions are always considered enemy units by the players’ models, and Minions consider all models controlled by the players to be enemy models.

Minions and the Villain

  • Minions are considered allied Faction units to the Villain and other Minions. Note that Villain cards and the Megaton Mashup Villain rules refer to any units (allied and enemy) in their description.
  • The Villain will generally completely ignore the presence of a Minion model for the purposes of Ultimate Destruction unless the Minion’s or Villain’s special rules cause the Villain to consider the Minions as units.
  • When a Villain advances into a space with a Minion, the Minion is destroyed like normal.

Minion Limit

  • There may never be more than 10 Minions on the map at any time.

So, Villains really don’t give a hoot about their Minions. They will ignore them all the time unless the Minions are useful to them. Sometimes, Minions will prove themselves useful reacting to the game as it progresses, like in the following scenario.

From on High

Setup

  • This scenario uses Sky Sentinel as the Villain. Sky Sentinel starts with 8 extra health on the bonus health card. Sky Sentinel uses 8 Strike Fighters (grunts) and 2 Rocket Choppers as Minions.

Minion Special Rules

  • Whenever Sky Sentinel draws a card without a target in the lower left corner but before resolving the card, put a Strike Fighter or Rocket Chopper Minion into play on any empty objective space on the map. The Minion is put into play even if the card isn’t resolved (e.g., when it is drawn when following the Charge card). If no objective spaces are empty, do not put a Minion into play. When placing Minions on objective spaces, they must be placed on all empty spaces of the following types before they can be placed on the next type of space:
    1. Power Zones
    2. Negative Zones
    3. Activators
    4. Player Spawn Points
    5. Neutral Spawn Points
  • Whenever Sky Sentinel is damaged by an attack, after the attack is resolved, each Minion within 4 spaces of an enemy unit makes a blast attack targeting the closest enemy unit. When making these attacks, Minions roll one Action Die and two Boost Dice.
  • Minion’s blast attacks have +1 RNG.

Special Rules

  • Whenever Sky Sentinel would make a brawl attack, he makes a blast attack instead.
  • When Sky Sentinel resolves the Blaster card while in hyper, he makes one additional blast attack targeting the same monster.

This scenario will get rather aggravating if you can’t find a way to deal with all that air support. Not only do the models occupy important spaces throughout the game, they’ll also destroy your units constantly. You’ll be tempted to end it as quickly as possible, but if you do, you may find yourself too far behind in the unit game to catch back up.

Units with Cloak will certainly help you keep your important buildings and objectives; however, if you want an added challenge, I suggest using only a few models with Cloak. I nearly made it a baseline rule that Sky Sentinel and his Minions ignore Cloak, but it makes the game incredibly hard.

That’s it for this week! I hope everyone has fun trying to shoot all those planes outta the sky!

Stay tuned for next week’s Insider—the last scenario in this series—which will feature Globbicus. In the meantime, be sure to pick up Megaton Mashup and Sky Sentinel today!
