Megaton Mix & Mashup Week 2: Gorghadra

Last week, we shared a tailor-made scenario for Incinerus in all his fiery glory. This week, we have a what-if scenario of Gorghadra being “accidentally” empowered by a scientist.

As the lab crumbled around her, Dr. Rory Bennet stood in reverent awe, looking up at her magnificent creation. Three long years had passed since her beautiful and prophetic dream about the space between dimensions; however, since then, her dreams—or more aptly, her nightmares—had become frantic and terrifying. In the last year, she’d slept no more than an hour a day as her last remaining lab partner, Dr. Angela Waters, watched her degrade both physically and mentally.

For her part, Angela could not understand how Rory’s genius had remained intact as she rapidly lost touch with reality. As much as it pained her to witness Rory’s decline, she still wouldn’t leave her friend’s side. And though she didn’t want to admit it to herself, Angela stayed, at least in part, out of keen scientific curiosity as the massive machine slowly came to be.

“Please, Rory, we have to go! That thing will bring the lab down any minute!” Angela cried, tears streaming down her face. Yet Rory failed to acknowledge Angela shouting right next to her—she put in the final commands to point the aperture of the device toward Gorghadra.

Rory flipped the safety container with the button to activate the device within. She trained her dead gaze on the space to the left of Angela.

“It’s over, so I can finally rest now, right?” she plead desperately of the empty space while Angela tried desperately to drag her from the console. Angela couldn’t understand how Rory had become so strong, but as she pulled with all her might, Rory could not be budged.

A disorienting smile bloomed on Rory’s face as she slowly pushed the giant red button down. A bright light filled the room, and a massive whirring sound roared from the device. A brilliant green and blue laser blasted from the device at Gorghadra. The beam penetrated all the way through Gorghadra’s center, hollowing out two buildings behind him and continuing on into the sky. The world fell silent around them as Angela and Rory stood, mouths agape, staring at the hole in the monster. Slowly, Gorghadra tumbled backward, smashing into the remnants of the building behind him.

Angela started at the motionless body of Gorghadra. “You…you did it! Rory, it’s over!”

A loud crunching sound echoed around them as Gorghadra began to rise again. They could see that the hole in his center had been supplanted by some sort of void with streams of energy moving up from the planet’s surface toward it.

Rory fell back limp into Angela’s arms as if all the energy had left her body at once.

“Angela? Where… am I?” she muttered.

Angela lowered Rory to the ground.

“No. What have I done?” Rory murmured just before Gorghadra let loose a massive roar.

The Destroyer Cometh!

During this game, Gorghadra will use interdimensional energy to siphon power from the core of the Earth, leading to a doomsday scenario if the players can’t put a stop to it.

Setup

This scenario uses Gorghadra as the Villain. Gorghadra starts with 10 extra health on the bonus health card. The players will need tokens to keep track of two different effects during the game.

Interdimensional Energy

At the beginning of the game, set aside eight tokens near Gorghadra’s monster card in a pile called the Energy Stack. Whenever Gorghadra suffers 3 or more damage in a single turn, roll a Boost Die and remove a token from the Energy Stack for each strike rolled. When Ghorghadra enters hyper form for the first time, roll three Boost Dice and remove a number of tokens from the Energy Stack equal to the strikes rolled.

On any of the players’ monster turns, if Gorghadra suffers no damage, add one token to the Energy Stack. (This may result in the Energy Stack having more than eight tokens.)

When the Energy Stack has zero tokens, the following occurs in order:

  • Gorghadra suffers 6 damage
  • All buildings Gorghadra is adjacent to are destroyed
  • Flip all debris tiles within three spaces of Gorghadra to the hazard side
  • Monsters (including Gorghadra) on any debris tile(s) that are flipped as a result of this rule count as colliding with the hazard(s)
  • All units within five spaces of Gorghadra are destroyed
  • Other monsters within three spaces of Gorghadra suffer 2 damage
  • The Interdimensional Energy, Reprieve, and Action: Interdimensional Siphon are disabled for the rest of the game

Reprieve

When Gorghadra draws a Villain card but before resolving it, the players may allow him to gather interdimensional energy instead. The players may not use this rule if Gorghadra has Speed tokens on his card. If the players choose to do this, the following occurs in order:

  • The Villain card doesn’t resolve
  • Discard the Villain card
  • Add one token to the Energy Stack
  • Restore 2 health to Gorghadra
  • Put 2 Speed tokens on Gorghadra’s card
  • Gorghadra’s activation ends immediately

Tokens on Gorghadra’s card are Speed tokens. This rule doesn’t affect Villain cards that have already completely resolved this turn.

Whenever Gorghadra moves as a result of a Villain card, add the number of Speed tokens on his card to the SPD of the card. After resolving the last Villain card drawn in a Villain turn, remove 1 Speed token from Gorghadra.

Special Rules

Gorghadra gains High Mobility, Flight, and Terrify in both forms.

Flight – This model can end its movement on impassable terrain and is immune to hazards except when colliding with them.

Terrify – While adjacent to this model, enemy units cannot roll Boost Dice in their attacks.

Players’ monsters gain Action: Interdimensional Siphon in both forms.

Action: Interdimensional Siphon – During your Monster Activation, this model may spend one Action Die to perform an Interdimensional Siphon action. If Gorghadra is within two spaces, remove 1 token from the Energy Stack. and this model suffers 1 damage. Tokens cannot be added to the Energy Stack this turn.

Gorghadra is a very dangerous foe in hyper form—Annihilate coupled with the multiple cards that give him two attacks can kill a monster very quickly. You will need to time when and where Gorghadra loses his last bit of interdimensional energy. If you can’t time it right for him to go hyper in the same turn he explodes, be sure to be ready to use the Reprieve ability!

I hope everyone is enjoying Megaton Mashup and these scenarios. Be sure to pick up Gorghadra in the destroyer starter and Megaton Mashup today. Stay safe out there, even if you are fighting an epic battle to defend the planet!
