Sculpting the God of Vemana

These new Monsterpocalypse monsters from the Ancient Ones Faction are coming rapid-fire now! This is my third contribution in recent weeks, and it was another tough one. The God of Vemana came with its own unique, divine challenges compared to the previous Ancient Ones I’ve shared (Warden of Teocali, Lord of Mictal, and King of Camazotz), and much like the previous Ancient Ones, my fluff knowledge is a bit lacking—but I have no doubt that my buddy Emanuel Class will come along behind me with some exciting information as the release date gets closer!

One of the interesting challenges about God of Vemana is how the body is made up of what I thought were roots, so the first version of this sculpt reflected that. In truth, I had also gotten a little lazy on the hair as it was getting close to the end of year and I was ready to check out for the holidays! Which I did, I shamelessly admit. But rest assured, Sculpting Director Ron Kruzie was quick to bring me back into line once the holidays had passed. Below is just a quick example of some of the feedback he gave me on this project. This was one of the first passes; you’ll soon see just how much changed over time.

Some of the input I received was just putting a little more work into specific areas, but one of the big changes that came down from above was my misinterpretation of the roots—they needed to be more tree-like. While that may not seem like a huge difference, but in our world, it does matter, and so I went in and resculpted the contents of the body to make them more the way they should have looked in the first place. I feel that this is one of those models that will really shine when painted, as our players are able to really have fun with all the twisting branches that make up the body of God of Vemana.

Once the bulk of those details were corrected and I expanded some additional detail, I moved on to the pose. While I wasn’t thinking of anything overly dramatic—I mean, it’s only an ancient monster stomping through a city trying to slam other ancient monsters into our mortal structures—it still needed to look good. Good-like. One might even say god-like. So, with a few changes, this is what we came up with: here I present my last Ancient Ones sculpt (for now, anyway)! I would not be surprised to see a future Insider on some of the troops that will be joining the battles!

Thanks for checking out this Insider and, as always, let me know how your games and painting are going on the Monsterpocalypse Facebook group!
