King of the Monsterpocalypse!

There are a few things that get us Privateer Press staffers as excited as kaiju fights, and as you can well imagine, the upcoming release of Godzilla vs. Kong has us all aflutter. So, of course, we’ve been debating who’s going to win. And even though I’ve clearly explained that King Kong was the winner in the original because, according to director Ishiro Honda, “monkeys are smarter than lizards,” the hypothetical fight keeps going and going like a kaiju bunny.

While we’ll all find out who the King of the Monsters will be on March 31st, there’s one thing we’ve been thinking about in the office quite a bit of late: who’s the King of the Monsterpocalypse?

Around this time of year, our amazing Convention Organized Play Coordinator/Infernal/All-Around-Cool-Dude Travis Marg runs a March Monsterpocalypse Madness bracket. You’ve probably noticed it’s a little late this year—and there’s a very good reason for that. This year, we decided to do something very special. We’re going to figure out who the true King of Monsterpocalypse is through your votes—and you, the community, are going to affect its outcome!

Now, this isn’t just a whole “you’re going to help guide the story” thing game companies tend to do;  this is going to be a physical product. Best of all, we’re not just talking an alt sculpt, either!

That’s right: it’s going to be something new, something you guys didn’t even know you wanted.

One thing about kaiju is that they never stay the same. They change and get more powerful as time goes on – and for the first time in Monsterpocalypse history, our kaiju will be doing the same! The top Protector and Destroyer monsters will get new versions, and together will be in our brand-new boxed set, Megaton Mashup 2: King of the Monsterpocalypse!

We’ve selected nineteen monsters from each agenda to compete…

Defender X Gorghadra
Nova-ESR Rogzor
Sky Sentinel Xaxor
Terra Khan Ares Mothership
Pteradax Tharsis-5
Armodax Deimos-9
King Kondo Hammerklak
White Dajan Blastikutter
General Hondo Cthugrosh
Sgt. Titanica Yasheth
Krakenoctus Ulgoth
Leviathron Globbicus
Zor-Raiden Gorghadratron
Zor-Magna Cyber Khan
Zor-Maxim Mecha-Maxim
Incinerus Xixorax
Zybanos Zavod 075
Rastaban Komkor 001
Gausamal Voyaka 099

One of the cool things about the bracket software we’re using is that you can create your own brackets predicting the outcome of our Royal Rumble. We’ve been having some fun in the office and have set up our own little pool. Here’s who some of our staff thinks is going to win:

I’m going with Incinerus on the Protectors side and Globbicus on the Destroyers side. There is nothing Incinerus can’t burn, including the rest of the Protectors bracket—it’ll just sail on in and win by default. Globbicus, on the other hand, has the spirit of a gladiatorial fighter, so it will obviously do well when pitted in a single-elimination fight to the death.

Xixorax is going to smash his way to victory this year. He almost beat down Terra Khan last year, and I’m excited to see him take the top Destroyers spot this year. For the Protectors bracket, I feel Incinerus is going to burn its way to victory, leaving nothing but ash in its wake.

—Travis Marg

This was a tough bracket for me to sus through, but in the end my Semi-Finals bracket pitted Xixorax against Cthugrosh in a bug vs. worm Destroyers throwdown. On the other side of the coin, I matched up Terra Kahn vs. King Kondo in the throwdown title fight of the century. In the end, Terra Kahn scrapes out a narrow victory over King Kondo while Xixorax comes out master of destruction with a little help from all the buzz surrounding his queen bee Dynastavus! In a world where rock beats scissors, I predict Terra Kahn to smash Xixorax in a blaze of glory fit only for the King of the Monsterpocalypse Terra Kahn! (Insert kaiju roar here.)

For the Protectors, I think it’s going to be Hondo; it’s no secret that I like the big monkeys.  While the obvious choice is the KING, let’s be honest: if anyone deserves some love, it’s Hondo. He’s an underdog of the Apes, but made it to General anyway. They didn’t give him a medal, so he stamped an SUV to his chest and called it good. For the Destroyers, I think it’s going to be the Mothership. I love this clawed plate. She has two of my favorite rules in the game on her: Abduct and Manufacture. She’s also got big grabby claws to be motherly with and is simply a joy to look at in any city setup.
