When I first started playing WARMACHINE, the Protectorate of Menoth was my faction. Several years down the road I noticed that, even though I had greatly expanded my collection, I still only owned just a few HORDES models. It seemed I had grown so accustomed to playing WARMACHINE, I’d barely given any thought to starting a HORDES list. Now that I work here at Privateer Press, I felt I should remedy this fast!
Speed painting, huzzah! I had recently been painting a Convergence of Cyriss army, squeezing out almost 80 points in only three weeks—but could I do more in even less time? I wanted to see if I could set the bar higher still. I remembered back in 2010 how several of the Privateer Press staffers had participated in the Impossible Dream Challenge—painting 100 points in one month! So, how about 50 points in only one week?
Now that I had committed to a self-imposed challenge, I needed to lock in a list to paint. Here’s what I decided to paint:
- ModelCost
- Krueger the Stormlord+5 warbeast points
- Gorax4
- Ghetorix11
- Megalith11
- Warpwolf Stalker10
- Shifting Stones x22 each
- Stone keeper1
- Druid Stoneward & Woldstalkers x25 each
- Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew1
- Blackclad Wayfarer2
- Gallows Grove1
This looked like it would be really fun to paint and even more fun to play. I was pumped and ready to start; the only thing that I needed then was a paint scheme. I thought about it for a while and realized I have never seen a yellow Circle Orboros army, so I decided to paint a test model to see how yellow played out. And here is the result:

Then I realized yellow Circle Orboros models look like angry stuffed animals. I went ahead and re-primered the model shortly after this photo was taken. The clock was ticking, and I was already repainting my first model, which is a bit of a rough start. At this point I still needed a paint scheme, but I didn’t have time to develop one, so I reluctantly decided to go with something similar to the normal studio colors.
I began the challenge on October 30th and ended on November 6th. Here are the results:

I’ll be the first to admit that this army probably wouldn’t win a Master Craftsman award; however, it was a blast to finish all 50 points in only a week! Now I’m off to the local scene to try out my newly painted Krueger the Stormlord list!
