For the Holiday Bundle painting challenge, I chose to paint the Legion of Everblight. Some of you might remember I already have a Legion army, but I’ve been thinking about repainting it for a while. I’m not particularly happy with the original paint job, and this seemed like a perfect time to re-start my Legion of Everblight from the ground up.
So I got the Legion of Everblight Holiday Bundle and got it all ready for the challenge ahead:

Laine’s Privateer Insider blog from a few months ago was an additional inspiration for my new Legion of Everblight paint scheme. If you want to take a quick peek at it, you can find Laine’s blog here: http://privateerpress.com/community/privateer-insider/insider-9-7-2012
If you haven’t seen it yet (and can’t bear to tear yourself away from this tale), the gist is that Laine used her copious photo editing skills to create limitless possibilities for Legion paint schemes. Her red and black sample paint scheme appealed to me the most, but I also didn’t want to copy it exactly as-is.
I decided to take that red and black scheme as the starting point and hit it with a splash of Legion fiction in the form of the blood of Pyromalfic. The existing Legion fiction covers some of the consequences of the Legion’s battle with Pyromalfic, but how might dragonspawn created in the wake of Pyromalfic’s fall differ from the spawn of Everblight we’re more used to seeing?
Using the black and red basis, I added in some additional tones, including Heartfire, Sanguine Highlight, Greatcoat Grey, and Yellow Ink, and used those to build up a magma effect on the first couple of warbeasts. I then carried that color scheme over to my first warrior model, a Blighted Nyss Shepherd. You can see the results here:

Now I’m at a bit of an impasse. I cannot decide if I like this paint scheme enough to make a whole army like this. I don’t hate it, per se, but I also don’t love it. Rather than looking like the “Blood of Pyromalfic” army, I wonder if it looks more like the “Blood of Captain Crayon.”
So I’ve decided to let the forums decide! Throw in your own vote of “yea” or “nay” for this magma-inspired Legion of Everblight army on the following thread: http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?130004-Staff-Painting-Challenge-Holiday-Bundle-Edition!
