In today’s blog, I want to talk about one of the best aspects of WARMACHINE and HORDES—the hobby.

I dare say it is the hobby that attracted many of us to WARMACHINE and HORDES in the first place. There is something almost magical about seeing a table filled with painted and converted miniatures, whether yours or your opponent’s. By themselves miniatures are works of three-dimensional art that represent an investment of hours of work just like any type of art, but I ask you, what other artwork culminates in smashing your opponent to paste?

One of my favorite parts about any convention is wandering around the WARMACHINE and HORDES event areas and looking at all the fantastic paint schemes and conversion work done by players. To me, it is this showmanship, this personal investment that makes our hobby so enjoyable and forms an essential core of the community.

Just like all art, the hobby of WARMACHINE and HORDES gives us a chance to express our creativity and make our mark on the game we enjoy so much. Nothing makes me want to pick up a paintbrush more than exploring a new take on a faction. My 507th alt-scheme Khador army is my latest painting project, and it has been immensely satisfying to see the concept in my head come to life on the tabletop.

As much as I enjoy the fruits of my own labor, I enjoy seeing other’s creativity just as much. Here are just a couple of my fellow staffer’s awesome hobby projects.

One of my favorite conceptual armies, Creative Director Ed Bourelle has put an awesome spin on the standard Circle Orboros. The army is full of characterful conversions and is painted in a bold, hellish color scheme.

Studio Director Ron Kruzie’s Skorne army was inspired by the movie 300. Starting with a striking color scheme, Ron has built an entire theme around his army.

Over the last couple of years, WARMACHINE and HORDES Lead Developer Jason Soles’ Cygnar army has been squaring off against all comers at every convention he attends. His striking dark brown and gold color scheme is instantly recognizable. A perfect fit to its devilish commander.

If you have a cool alternate color scheme or conversion for your army I’d love to see it. If you want to show us your handiwork, take a digital picture, fill out a submission form (http://privateerpress.com/no-quarter/submission-guidelines), and then send both to submissions@privateerpress.com. You never know, your hard work may end up in a future blog or an issue of No Quarter Magazine!
