Monsterpocalypse: The Bird is The Word

As the First Guardians take to defending/destroying the world (it’s all a point-of-view thing), stomping and smashing buildings and enemies, we know they need their support units! While some of these troops have been released already, like Jaguar Spirits & Arbiter Monoliths, already available on the Privateer Press store, there are more swelling to join the ranks!

With some First Guardians being made of stone, it was only appropriate to have a few of their units reflect the style of these monsters. So, from their ancient temples come the Temple Gargoyles and the Temple Monolith to bolster your Monsterpocalypse troop choices.

I’m here to tell you, Monsterpocalypse troops can be a lot of fun to sculpt—they’re normally quick due to their size, and they’re not overly detailed for the same reason, but it’s still fun to try and get some character into these troops…unless they are made of stone? Possibly. Ah, well, not to worry—we can always build something out for them.

The Temple Gargoyle was an easy sculpt to knock out. A few deviations from the art had to be taken into account for both scale and production (like putting the legs together and eliminating the fine etching), but I never get it right the first time, so once again, I share here some of the notes from Sculpting Director Ron Kruzie. Just a few changes this time, and the Temple Gargoyle was good to go.

And much like the Gargoyle, the Temple Monolith was also a pretty quick piece, but the design and pose made it especially interesting for me. I enjoyed getting to do the freehand work on the body, and if I do say so myself, the end results were a pretty cool addition to the First Guardians.

I have just recently finished working on these new models, and even then a few changes have been made, and as always, production may need to make a few additional alternations. The Monolith received a bit more tweaking to its pose and a few details that were not showing needed to be tweaked, so you’re seeing a bit of an earlier version…but I still wanted to share where we are at so far with these upcoming releases for Monsterpocalypse!
