Monsterpocalypse Monday: April Showers Bring May… Monsters?!

May has been a big month for Monsterpocalypse, but it’s not over yet! There are two all-new monsters coming to some of the first Factions ever released: Tyrranix and Mogroth, both coming to ruin every other Faction’s day!

Let’s start with our favorite stompy friendo.

Tyrranix has a focus on units, especially Carnidons and Raptix. He plays the unit game well between empowering his own and stomping the enemies’. Fast-moving units, especially if Terra Khan is providing Stampede, are just the ticket for this specific monster. Raptix will excel at taking side objective locations from low-defense, high-speed units. And if Tyrannix just happens to be within five squares, you will also enjoy an extra Power Die.

That said, a few quick notes about Fury: because it requires hitting, you do not gain a Power Die from every unit you destroy with an attack. With Body Slam and Throw power attacks, you’ll gain 1 Power Die for hitting the monster but only the normal Power Die from destroying buildings or units. Ram hits the building, so you will get 1 extra Power Die but none for destroying or damaging monsters. Stomp and Rampage attacks do not actually hit any models, so Fury will not give you any extra Power Dice for those power attacks. Finally, Swat can potentially hit two models, one for each attack roll, so it will generate potentially 2 extra Power Dice.

In hyper, Tyrranix picks up a very powerful new rule—Action: Scatter. This is his way to deal with screening units. Although it won’t work as consistently as abilities like Abduct, it will certainly do the job often enough to be worthwhile. Further, this ability can screw up your opponent’s power base, sending units scattering from secured buildings and objective spaces. Lastly, he picks up Crunch, which gives him some hard-won access to super damage. Screen clearing and super damage in the same monster is pretty rare, but Tyrranix is just that frightening.

Next up: the master divinator of the Lords of Cthul.

Nothing hides from Mogroth, and I mean that literally. Divination is the ultimate spotter…and it even stacks with Spotter. Mogroth pairs strongly with any blast attack. A Hunter with Spotter, Penetrator, Divination, Secondary Batteries, and a nearby defense turret is rolling 8 Boost Dice with the target being at –3 DEF. That’s a nearly 95% chance of hitting a DEF 8 monster if you use 2 Action Dice. Add in a reroll, and things just get silly. Now…will the perfect circumstances ever occur to get all that done? Maybe not, but it’s incredibly fun to think about!

Other than Divination, Mogroth sports some solid efficiency between Energy Cycle, Maximize, and Siphon. It certainly requires an eye on positioning (pun intended), but Mogroth can certainly make your unit turns look more like a shooting gallery.

Mogroth is very straightforward in its hyper. Rapid Fire with a 6 Boost Dice blast attack benefiting from Hit & Run, Siphon, Energy Cycle, and Divination is incredibly efficient. Two Action Dice, 6 Boost Dice, and 1 Power Die hits a DEF 8 monster 65% of the time, and the attack costs you almost no resources if you hit. Plus, it triggers Hit & Run, helping you get into position for a power attack without spending Action Dice on steps.

So, there it is—That is officially everything from the Monsterpocylpse development desk for the month of May. Finally, it’s all out there! Be sure to pre-order these two new monsters—plus a Savage Swarm and/or Elemental Champions starter set—all coming May 28th!
