A Case to Call Home

The Display Case

Many of us have one.

They come in varieties of sizes and shapes.

But mine is special.

Origin Story

Many moons ago, nestled in the halls of Privateer Press HQ, I sat amongst my coworkers. Next to me was my buddy Ben, who had a display case full of his work—and I cannot lie, I was a little jealous as I had literally nothing to my name. But Ben assured me that someday my time would come, and I would have a display case to call my very own!

After a few months of work, I finally had my first model box to proudly display at my desk: the Earthbreaker! I didn’t have a display case, so I tacked the box to the wall over my desk.

And so it began…

As the year went by, I slowly added a few more models to my wall. Aurora, Father Lucant, Issyria, and then a problem was upon me: I needed a display case! Well, my friend Ben, being an insightful lad, was able to recognize my situation and had the answer. He gifted me HIS display case! Now I had four whole shelves for my…four models. Okay, so I wasn’t really filling the case, but again I cannot lie: I was proud to have my work on display, even if it was only next to my desk and even if no one else was impressed.

When I moved to remote status, I was certainly not going to leave my case at HQ, oh no—this thing was going with me. So, I hauled it first to my apartment in the Seattle area before dragging it cross-country to a couple of stops along the way before settling in my current home in Missouri.

A few things happened on this adventure with my case. It got beat up a little bit, which was to be expected, but it still works just fine. It also got filled up. Yep, my four shelves with four models had exploded with life!

I still have that same display case. Oh, I need another one now, but the original still stands behind me, and it still gives me a great sense of pride when I look into it or some visitor to the house asks, “What’s this about?” I have great memories in that case—from the Deneghra box I gifted to my mom (she was my biggest fan and supporter) to custom-painted models by my friends (Charles Foster, Chris Suhre, Rob Kingery, Natalie Sheppard) to primed models that I hope to paint or play with at some point. Nearly all of them are Privateer models, though some never made it past the initial sculpt. And, of course, I also have the memories of those early days when the shelves were bare.

So, today I share with you an overcrowded display case with a pile of models waiting for a vacancy! Thanks to our community for making this dream for me possible!
