Oblivion Campaign: Fate of Caen

I’ve seen the rumbling of people waiting eagerly for the second installment of the Oblivion campaign. It unfortunately got delayed a little due to current events, but dev is on it, and now it is nearly complete. Welcome to Oblivion Campaign: Fate of Caen!

Death reigns supreme over Caen as the desperate armies of the Iron Kingdoms prepare for the coming darkness. Players will pick up at the end of the campaign Stygian Prophecies with the portents of a coming siege on the powerbases of mankind.

The prologue will follow the desperate attempts to delay or accelerate a siege on a major city. The corruptors will seek to gorge themselves on the souls of the residential areas of the city, while the guardians will cling to the hope that their leadership can lead them through this horrific nightmare.

Yet unlike Stygian Prophecies, the stakes are at an all-time high; that desperation can be a powerful tool. But as one side clings to survival, the other will fight all the harder to ensure the war’s end. Desperation is a new mechanic coming to the second Oblivion campaign…

Desperation

When a player loses a game, that player may choose one of the following benefits for their army in subsequent games. A player can select a different one after each game lost. A player who loses 3 or more games in a row may select two Desperation benefits instead of one. When a player wins a game while under the effects of one or more Desperation benefits, all benefits are lost until that player loses another game.

  • Rise to the Occasion — The player’s models with the Battlegroup controller special rule gain Great Power. (Great Power During your Control Phase, this model can upkeep one spell without spending focus, fury, or essence.)
  • Make Every Shot Count — The player’s solo models gain Mark Target. (Mark Target Friendly Faction models gain +2 to ranged attack rolls against enemy models within 5˝ of this model and in its LOS.)
  • Helping Hand — The player’s warjack, warbeast, monstrosity, and horror models gain Lash. (Lash This model and friendly warrior models B2B with it cannot become knocked down.)
  • Resolute — The player’s non-warcaster, non-warlock, and non-infernal master units gain Unyielding. (Unyielding This model gains +2 ARM against melee damage rolls.)

In this war, everyone is fighting with their very souls at stake. Even as troops become demoralized by their losses, they are forced into more and more desperate fights, fighting ever harder for survival. As oblivion progresses, the stakes will only rise all the more for each side.

Who will make it through this battle is anyone’s guess. But we can be sure it won’t be everyone! Just as the Hermit of Henge Hold wrote in his scrolls of end times, heroes and villains will die. You will never know exactly who this might be, but with each game, the ultimate demise of some of the world’s greatest heroes becomes all but certain.

Death of a Hero

At the end of each game, for each character model/unit that was removed from play, roll 2D6. On a 2 or 3, that character is Dead and cannot be played again by that player for the rest of the campaign. On a 4, that character is Recovering and cannot be played in the next game that player plays. Any other roll results in the character’s Full Recovery.

Only one character may die per player per campaign. Once one character is Dead, all subsequent Death of a Hero rolls of 2 and 3 that the player makes during the campaign result in the character Recovering instead of being Dead.

When players create lists for the “Fate of Caen” scenario, all characters immediately recover; however, a Dead character remains Dead.

A player need not make a Death of a Hero roll for a warlock, warcaster, or infernal master if they only own two models of that type for the Faction they are currently playing.

Even if humanity survives these trying times, Caen will never be the same again. The final scenario of the campaign is entitled The Fate of Caen. Players will face off on a gigantic battlefield with a massive portal behind them. Although the portal may lead to safety, reaching it will be determined by how the final battle plays out. Depending on how the battle progresses, there are several potential outcomes for Caen. One leads to the ultimate ruin of civilization, complete collapse. Although a few will make it through the gate, the piles of dead left in their wake will have already gorged the Infernals to the brim. There is another outcome, however, that leads to the infernal hordes losing their most potent footholds on Caen. This could be a brighter future, where mankind can slowly pick up the tatters of civilization and make something all together new. No matter the results, though, Caen will be changed…forever.
