The Henge Hold Scrolls: Retrospective

The Henge Hold Scroll approaches a terrifying climax. Many characters’ lives are at risk, and we have not been gentle with the sacrifices. The jeopardy is painfully real. And while refugees flee through the gate to other worlds, forces that want to destroy it clash with forces that need it for survival, and then there are those who wish to control the gate for their own secret purposes.

The world hangs in the balance.

So, it seemed like a good time to take a short break.

When Matt Goetz and I began writing the Henge Hold Scroll from Matt Wilson’s initial outline back in December of 2019, we thought we would be writing a few short entries a day. One character’s point of view, one interaction, one small piece of the overall tale of what the arrival of the infernals means to the Iron Kingdoms. Our vision was basically sound bites.

That vision lasted all of about two days.

The planning alone was epic. Matt Goetz built a chart and a map, indicating who was where and when and where they were going next. The map of the henge itself was a mass of circles and arrows—the way a general might outline the field of battle. New combatants would enter the arena at a later date while others would only watch from a distance.

It has been a harried but thrilling ride these last three months. We took turns writing, each of us taking character arcs and following them through to the end.  We went back and forth on some scenes and character development, driving toward our equivalent of a season finale to be at least partially determined by narrative events at Lock & Load this June.

Until then, we will continue developing those elements of the story that we are already sure about. I don’t want to say it will be brutal—it’s such a…well, brutal word—but I certainly feel comfortable saying it will be a rough ride for a lot of us.

We hope you’ve enjoyed it so far, and like Caine, you know we’ll be back soon. Oh, and that reminds me: be sure to check out the Scroll one more time tomorrow.

We’d love to hear your feedback as well.  It’ll give us insight into what you’ve enjoyed so far and what you anticipate seeing when we begin again in June.
