Out of the Void Gate: Iron Star Alliance

Is it time? Can we talk about Warcaster yet?

Great. You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to talk about Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika. In the months following the announcement at Lock & Load GameFest 2019, I watched concept art, world-building notes, then full art and models flow into the office. I’ve watched the game be designed and developed, the rules refined and tightened. The entire time, the only people I could talk to about all of this were people who were seeing and experiencing the same things alongside me in the office, and you can only take those conversations so far:

Me: “Hey, did you see the new Paladin model on Jordan’s desk?!”

Andy: “Yeah-”

Cailon: “Oh my GAWD, are you talking about Warcaster AGAIN, Jeff?”

Then I go cry in my car.

But! Now I get to talk about Warcaster with you guys. And today we’re going to talk about the Faction I’ll be collecting first: The Iron Star Alliance.

I saw all of the art as it came in, and for a long time, I was on the fence about which Faction I wanted to play out of the gate. Then I picked up a Paladin model, and I knew.

I knew.

The shields, the hex patterning, the streamlined look. This is what I wanted.

The Iron Star Alliance is a long-established government of worlds and territories within the setting of Warcaster, and the paladins are the elite arm of a military force that is only made possible through the contribution of resources from thousands of compliant nations across hundreds of different worlds. Through cooperation and coercion, the safety and security of these worlds becomes guaranteed.

The Iron Star Alliance represent the establishment within the universe of Warcaster. In the race to collect Arcanessence and other resources, they’re always the first ones to the table and the last ones to leave. They take what they want because it is already theirs, and they will defend it tenaciously.

Of course, I didn’t know any of this when I decided this was my Faction, but I certainly found it compelling. The idea that the universe was already mine, and I deserve it more than my opponent by virtue of just being me just seems right. Why wouldn’t it?

But it wasn’t any of that information that drew me to the Iron Star Alliance. As I said, it was a specific model that I picked up from studio painter Jordan Lamb’s desk. I later learned that model was the Paladin Commander.

That’s about all I’m allowed to talk about, but I expect I’ll be back very soon to share even more about Warcaster with everyone. I hope you guys are as excited about what’s coming as I am!
