A few months ago, I had the privilege to playtest LEVEL 7 [INVASION]. The game was tense, exciting, and a ton of fun. By far my favorite part, much to the chagrin of my fellow players, was placing the invading Hydra on the map.

The Hydra bring something new and totally awesome to the LEVEL 7 universe. I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of excitement whenever a drop ship landed in my coalition’s territory, even though I knew each one was driving me closer to obliteration, because more drop ships meant I could place more Hydra!

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on my own copy of INVASION, and when I finally did, I decided to give my new Hydra models the loving attention they deserve. The figures that come with INVASION are not only fantastically sculpted, but they are also plentiful, so I wanted to keep my color scheme simple so I could actually get them all painted.

I decided to paint a single Hydra model to test out my scheme, which is based off the cover art for LEVEL 7: Danger Close.

Step 1: Prime the model black.

Step 2: Basecoat with Bloodstone.

Step 3: Highlight with a mix of equal parts Bloodstone, Ember Orange, and Hammerfall Khaki.

Step 4: Highlight with Hammerfall Khaki.

Step 5: Highlight with Ryn Flesh.

Step 6: Ink the crevices with Brown Ink and paint all metallic areas with Quick Silver.

Step 7: Wash metallic areas with Beaten Purple, then clean up the base.

There you have it! Only 74 more Hydra, 4 drop ships, and 60 coalition units to go until I have a fully painted set of LEVEL 7 [INVASION]. Did I mention this game has a lot of figures?
