No Quarter #51 just went to the printer. As the new editor-in-chief, I consider this to be a major milestone—or really good luck. Either way, it’s all good.
I joined Privateer Press at the tail end of issue #50, so the latest issue allowed me to be involved every step of the way, from initial concepts to final printers’ proofs. I looked at some articles again and again to be sure they were right—I’m pretty sure I can now tell you which ones are the finest restaurants in the Khadoran town of Novokorska (whichever one seats you with your back to the wall), how to feed a semi-domesticated Blackhide Wrastler (in a word: don’t), and exactly why the infamous Dr. Arkadius is obsessed with surgical implants (because he’s a wheel short of a wheelbarrow).
No Quarter is already an outstanding work. In reading back issues to play catch-up with outgoing editor-in-chief Aeryn Rudel’s three years’ worth of developing it, I see an exceptional amount of growth and depth, all of it geared toward bringing a greater variety and scope of our games to our players. In fact, Aeryn’s guidance on issue #51 makes me feel much more confident about handling issue #52 on my own.
So, then, what can I bring to the table as the incoming editor-in-chief?
Well, I have quite a bit of experience in the gaming industry—eighteen years, in fact—and I’ve served as editor-in-chief for other publications and teams in the past. I’ve been an editor for over twenty years, and I’ve been writing for magazines a little longer than that. I have the technical experience to make it happen.
Also, I love WARMACHINE and HORDES (though one Khadoran War Dog is enough to take me out in short order). I think the Iron Kingdoms is a fantastic place to visit, but I don’t think I could live there (see the Khadoran War Dog problem above). And I have at least a few ideas for how to make No Quarter even cooler than it already is (and I’d rather not do Khadoran War Dog articles; it’s a personal issue at this point). I have ideas for new columns, for tweaking old favorites, for finding new readers and rewarding those who’ve been around all along. So, I have the passion to bring it all together.
Oh, and finally, I have an Arkadius complex. Trust me, it exists.
In the end, I’m very happy to be aboard. My first solo issue—the first one where Aeryn lets me off the leash—is coming in January. In fact, I’m working on it now. And I’m even getting some help with my Khanindorophobia. It’s all good.
I’m off to make a magazine. Wish me luck.
