One important aspect of creating a board game or card game is how the game will be packaged. Though it would have been easy to make the argument that High Command needed only a few simple dividers for faction cards and general cards, several of us around the office really wanted to have a molded plastic tray with a space for each detachment. Oh, and we wanted them to fit even with card sleeves. And we wanted the cards to stay in place if you moved the box around a bit. This led to several rounds of potential tray designs with varying sizes and spacing of card slots. In the end, I’m quite happy with where we wound up. The box easily accommodates card sleeves, and as long as you don’t shake the box like an ape (I’m looking at you, Ed Bourelle), the cards will stay in place with or without sleeves.

There was, however, one last thing several of us wanted—an insert for card sorting. So we made one to download. Actually, we made two!

Before printing this card insert, be sure to set your printer to print the graphic at full size. On my computer, that means using “Actual size” rather than “Fit” or “Shrink oversized pages” on the print screen. This probably varies based on your computer and/or the PDF reader you’re using, but you get the idea.

Second, as both versions are in the same pdf, you’ll want to scroll to the page you want to print and select “Current page” in the print options window.

So which version of the insert do you want? It really just depends on how you want to group your cards. The version that starts with Orange detachments was my original idea; Orange, Yellow, and Green are grouped together as the faster and cheaper colors in High Command, while the stronger and sturdier colors of Blue, Purple, and Red are grouped separately. At Gen Con, however, I noticed a lot of folks using the rainbow spectrum starting with Red and ending with Purple (ROYGBIV), so we’ve provided that option as well.

I hope everyone’s having a great time getting more High Command games under their belts. I can’t wait to hear about all the release events and upcoming Kingmaker tournaments around the world.
